When viewed under UV light there seems to have been quite large areas of re-touching, particularly upper left background, on the cravat, crackelure infill to just above the sitter's right shoulder and smaller patches elsewhere. The work has been cleaned and relined. There is some crackelure still visible, for example, on his forehead and vertically through the tunic. It is presented in a modern frame which is in good condition.
