Chinoiserie export red lacquered sewing box, early 19th Century, canted rectangular form with carrying handles, decorated throughout with gilt figures and pavilions, opening to a black gilt lacquered interior with lidded compartments and a number of carved ivory accessories including needlework clamps and three carved ivory bodkin cases, the base fitted with a pull out drawer with lift up writing slope, width 43cm, depth 31cm, height 19.5cm

There is some wear to the top resulting in the loss of faces on the figures and general wear of the gilt down to the red lacquer ground. On the edge of the lid there are chips and losses. There are small chips and losses to the lacquer around the base.

There is key but the lock is incomplete.

Inside there is one black lacquered cover missing from the compartments in the top. There are splits to the ivory trellis work.
