Rare Japanese lacquered and shibayama cased upright piano, impressed mark for retailer Crane & Sons 'C&S 189605', the case bordered with bamboo and having four signed shibayama panels featuring birds and flowers, the ground lacquered throughout with black and detailed with birds and foliage, metal framed, straight strung, further impressed number '5887', Victorian registered design number on the reverse '213867' width 141cm, height 130cm, depth 61cm
NB: Crane & Sons were at one time the largest piano retailers in the North West, with flagship emporia in Liverpool and Wrexham. They retailed many different makes of piano, but whilst their marketing materials state that their premises had factories, it is thought that they did not actually make pianos themselves. Their stock numbers preceded by C&S is indicative of the date the piano was in stock and sold, and according to records on www.pianohistory.info this instrument is likely to have been in stock in the late 1930s.
